5 Common Myths About Ortho-K — What Parents Really Need to Know

For years, Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) has given children and adults the freedom to see clearly without daytime glasses or contact lenses. Yet, many families are still unsure about how it works and whether it’s safe for kids. At Charlotte Contact Lens Institute, we hear the same misconceptions again and again — so let’s clear them up.

Reality: Ortho-K lenses are FDA-approved for overnight wear and considered safe for kids when properly fitted and cared for. Our team takes time to teach both children and parents how to clean, insert, and remove the lenses to ensure healthy vision.

Reality: In fact, Ortho-K is most beneficial for children because it can slow down the progression of nearsightedness (myopia). Starting early gives kids the best chance of protecting their eyesight for the future.

Reality: The effect is temporary and fully reversible. When a child stops wearing the lenses, the cornea quickly returns to its natural shape and the prescription returns within a few days.

Reality: Most kids hardly notice their Ortho-K lenses once they’re in. Because they’re only worn overnight, children typically sleep comfortably and wake up with clear vision.

Reality: While young athletes love the freedom Ortho-K provides, its greatest benefit is myopia control. That’s why so many parents choose it even if their child isn’t involved in sports.

Ortho-K is often a great choice for children with mild to moderate myopia, healthy eyes, and a desire to go glasses-free during the day. We recommend a consultation if your child’s prescription increases year after year.
