(Pellucid Marginal Degeneration)

Improving Vision in Cases of PMD

- Where Advanced Technology Meets Compassionate Care

Pellucid marginal degeneration (PMD) is also commonly referred to as pellucid, and is a rare and progressive corneal disorder that leads to thinning in the peripheral cornea, typically in a band-like pattern. Unlike other corneal conditions, PMD specifically affects the lower portion of the cornea, often leading to significant visual distortions and astigmatism.

Our doctors are experienced in cases of pellucid, and Charlotte Contact Lens Institute features advanced technology, longer than normal exam slots, and one-on-one interaction with the doctor. A common treatment option in cases of pellucid is scleral contact lenses.

We utilize advanced and specialized technology which collects up to 240,000 unique data points in order to design a fully customized scleral contact lens. Customized scleral contact lenses work well in cases of PMD, because the lens vaults entirely over the cornea, and the scleral contact lens corrects for any corneal thinning and distorted optics.

Treatment Options for PMD

While there is no cure for pellucid, various treatment options are listed below, and are available to manage symptoms, improve visual acuity, and enhance overall quality of life.
